Errors

Error reports are the most useful mail this site can get. That covers a wrong date or weekday, a conversion that does not come out, a number that does not match its source, and a citation to a law, resolution or standard document that points to the wrong place or says something else.

A report that can be checked quickly has three parts:

  1. The page, by its address or title.
  2. The sentence, quoted as it appears.
  3. The basis: the document, table or dataset that disagrees, with a link or a full citation.

A report is weighed against its source in the same way as any other claim on the site (see Where the numbers come from). If the page turns out to be wrong, the fix is logged at the end of that page and on the corrections log, marked “Reported by: reader.”

Leads on sources

Pointers to material the site can use are welcome: a primary document, a public-domain scan of an old standard, almanac or survey record, or an open dataset. Please include the page where it can be found and the license or rights statement it carries. Sources need to be openly readable and released under terms that allow reuse on a site like this one; Permissions lists the licenses that work.

Outside the scope of this site

Some requests cannot be taken on here:

  • Quick conversions or calculations for your own figures.
  • Legal metrology, certification or compliance questions about weights and measures.
  • Advice on which measuring instrument to buy.
  • Investment, interest-rate or price questions.
  • Astrology, choosing auspicious dates, or the religious meaning of calendar dates.

For a conversion that matters legally or commercially, the official sources are a national metrology institute such as NIST, or the agency responsible for weights and measures where you are.

No reply time is promised. Messages are used only to deal with what they raise; the privacy page has the details.
